| | OpenAL problem with Vista and X-Fi Titanium Hello,
I'm looking for some help with OpenAL, because the french Creative support is just VERY POOR.
Anyway...
I bought a brand new X-Fi Titanium Fatality, and I'm using Windows Vista x64.
I fully installed the CD that comes with my X-Fi, then upgraded the drivers using the auto update. No errors.
Then I've been on this website and downloaded the latest OpenAL driver for my system.
But some games aren't working with OpenAL, Doom 3 says it cannot find any EAX and OpenAL subsystem. Red Orchestra do not return any error but I'm only having a stereo sound, but if I use Alchemy to simulate directsound (it creates a decoy of directsound) it works in 5.1.
Strangely Unreal Tournament 3 works in 5.1 with OpenAL checked in game.
So to make sure I downloaded the SDK to test my OpenAL with "PlayMultiChannelWin64.exe". But the test is not fine, It only play on my front speakers, not my rear speakers !
I'm a bit lost. Is my OpenAL working or not ? Some games do not find it, some just play stereo and some are working. I remember that OpenAL was easier in the past (with Xp and my Audigy).
Do you have any idea of what I could check ?
Thanks. | |
| | Sorry to hear about the troubles you've been having.
This site is not intended as technical support (it is aimed at software developers using OpenAL), but here are a few ideas you could try ...
1) Some games will check for certain technology support (e.g. 128 voices, EAX 4 / 5) ... so make sure your soundcard is in "Game Mode" as not all modes support all the features.
2) Set the Speaker Mode using the Creative Audio Control Panel - not the one built into Vista. This is because Vista doesn't support all the speaker modes that the soundcards supports - specifically Headphone Mode. Also - with jack-detection you MUST have the speakers connected to the correct jacks for everything to work correctly.
3) If you are not using Headphone mode ... then you can use the Vista Audio Control Panel (accessed by right-clicking on the speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner and selecting "Playback devices...". Select "Properties", then the "Levels" tab then the "Balance" button. This allows you to set per-speaker output levels - make sure this all have sensible values.

| | A few thoughts ...
Make sure you are in "Game" mode ("mode de jeu" ?) in the Creative Audio Console application. This is the only mode that enables EAX 4 & 5 which some games require (including Doom3 as far as I know).
Also - make sure you set your speaker mode using the Creative Audio Console application rather than the Vista Control Panel.
If you have all the Creative software installed - does the speaker test (the one that speakers all the channels) work correctly?

| | You need to use Alchemy to get EAX working under vista and win 7 because the HAL layer is removed in those windows versions by MS effectively destroying EAX support for older games. | |
