| Optical out for Dolby Digital (5.1) I recently bought a new computer and got an X-Fi Extreme Audio wanting to get 5.1 surround from my amp using the optical out.
After several days of searching and fiddling trying to get 5.1 using alchemy I found out that I never would because the soundcard must support Dolby Digital Live. I won`t mention Creatives underhanded role in this. If you have any other X-Fi model it will support DDL though creative didnt iclude it in the software and want you to pay more to add this component. Though a modder by the name of Daniel Kawakami has made them available to download for free ( found this at www.nordichardware.com/news,7722.html )
My motherboard`s (ex58 extreme) realtek onboard sound does support DDL, and after simply adding the Dolby control centre I had 5.1 surround in all my games (Empire TW, Mount & Blade, Rise of flight,..).
I am glad I did`nt buy Alchemy (what a joke), for it`s now as redundant as my X-Fi Extreme Audio.
Creative didnt have any information on obtaining 5.1 through optical that I could find. And they have made it almost impossible to contact them for support by email (unless you`re willing to jump through several flaming hoops and no tel in Australia anyway.
Hope this helps anyone trying to get 5.1 (or higher I guess) through optical out. |

| I think you're mixing things up. Signal output from SPDIF needs to be encoded. Creative offer DDL for a fee (very small one to cover Dolby's licensing costs) so that you get this option to have Dolby surround to your receiver.
ALchemy doesn't have anything to do with all this -- it's just a translation layer which translates DirectSound calls (now deprecated by Microsoft) to OpenAL so that users of old games can still enjoy hardware accelerated EAX sound. |

| Hey, thnx for the heads up, I havn`t been into computers for a while until just recently.
So are you saying that if you use ddl optical out you don`t need alchemy ?
The oldest game I have and works 5.1 with the above set-up is Call of Cthulhu.
Maybe I missed it though I could find little info from creative on optical out and ended up here trying to get my X-fi to do what was so simple for the onboard realtek (probably not as good quality though). |
